Let this be very clear that if the purpose of the whole exercise is to make money in a foreign land than Finland would be your last choice. I have yet to come across a tree in Finland where I could gather Euros from. No doubt some individuals who have worked very hard (and when I say ‘very’ I want to stress fully on the word that it is indeed very hard to make money) to make money and study together. But those individuals have never bothered about the nature of job or how much was the pay from that work etc. You need to go round searching for working and knocking from door to door asking people if they need someone to help them with something.

This is of course the crudest form of way of looking for work. Another more organized manner could be that you make a resume (preferably in Finnish) and drop it in hotels, shops etc and hope that they call you or hire you. Like someone who has made some money here would say to me “Its about how you market yourself”.

1. University students are allowed to work for up to 25 hours per week without a work permit.

2. If you do not know Finnish, Norwegian, Russian or Swedish it can be very difficult to find an ODD job.

Part Time Job:-

ODD jobs are hard to find..but some ppl still do it ( cleaning [ 800 euro per month ] , paper delivery [ 400 euro per month max ] , restaurants [ 600 euro per month ] )...but usually students coming into masters program get their funded thesis quite early from which they can easily manage 800 to 1000 euro per month...or some of them get IT job from which they are earning around 1200 euro..Also some of them like me are doing internships(paid) .....

 Regular IT Job:-

There are lot of jobs for programmers like ( C, C++, Java, Symbian, S60 Mobile application development, Linux system programming)....but it does not mean that u get job in ur 1st week....u have to w8 for a good opportunity.....For Telecommunication Networks Jobs....i was taking to waqas Khattak bhai(Engr in Ericsson from Helsinki) n according to him, there are not so many jobs in this field.......u may get if u r lucky or get thesis in Nokia or ericsson but its not so frequent...

How to Search for a Job ?

Here are some steps to search and apply for professional job in Finland using the example of IT industry while understanding the job ads. I have tried to keep it simple and focus on the new Pakistani students aiming to start a professional job or trainingship but I need help from other TurkuLainens in improving and updating this doc.

1- Cover Letter and Example CV (according to EU):

Goto the 'Applying' section at http://www.aarresaa ri.net/english/ jobseekers. htm for help in this matter.
Also, Recruitment web of Univ. of Helsinki, http://www.helsinki .fi/rekry/

Sample Cover Letter: http://www.helsinki .fi/rekry/ materiaalit/ Sample%20cover% 20letter. pdf
Sample CV: http://www.helsinki .fi/rekry/ materiaalit/ Sample%20CV% 20in%20English. pdf

2- Searching an IT job:

There are many good job portals but unfortunately most of them publish the job details in finnish.

a- http://www.aarresaa ri.net/english/ jobboard. htm
b- http://www.mol. fi/paikat/
c- http://www.monster. fi/
d- http://www.uratie. fi/uratie/ main.jsf
e- http://www.stepston e.fi/
f- http://rekrytointi. utu.fi/?cmd= viewJobs
g- http://www.uranus. fi/en/jobseekers /jobs/open. php?id=19982

3- Steps to searching a job at the Ministry of Labor (MOL):

Open the job-ad website of the Ministry of Labor.  http://www.mol. fi/paikat/
(Avoimet Työpaikat...Avoimet: open Työpaikat:work/ job places)

You will see HAKU (search) at the upper left hand of the page. Underneath will be three selection-lists. The left-most list titled 'Ammattiala ?' (Profession) contains very abstract profession titles. Start by Selecting/Clicking 'Hallinta-, tomisto-,matkailu- ja IT-alan työ (1177)' and it will show a list under title 'Tarkennus' (Focused field/sub-category) . Select 'Tieototekniikka (227)' under 'Tarkennus' which will put 'Tieototekniikka (227)' under title 'Valitut ammattialat' (Selected Profession).

Don't change the default selections on the rest of the page. Make sure that in the lines 'Ilmoitettu' (notify), 'Työn kesto' (job/work duration), 'Työn tyyppi' (job/work type), in all of them, 'Kaikki' is selected. The last text input box is for Sanahaku (search keyword). Normally you don't need to put anything here unless you want to narrow down your search to JAVA or C, etc.

Now click the button labelled 'Etsi' (Search) (first of the three buttons provided).
You will be directed to the result page for the search. On the top-left corner will be the summary of your search, for example: Haun tulokset (something like Summary): Yhteensä (All Together) 227 paikkailmoitusta (work-place announcements/ notifications) .

3.1- Understanding the Job Requirements:

The searched open-positions will be by-default categorized and some the common categories are: Tietotekniikkapää lliköt (Technical/Technolo gy Managers/Chief) , Suunnittelijat (SW Engineers, SW Developer/Designer/ Architect, Web Designer/Developer) , Operaattorit ja mikrotukihenkilö t (operators and micro-machine support staff), Muu tietotekninen työ (Other ICT Jobs)

Most of the job ads are in global advertisement style, i.e. Job Ad shows the job title, company name and city, the first paragrah introduces the company. Then comes the job details followed by the requirements for candidates. In the last comes the application period and contact information.

Like other countries, some companies directly hire personnel while other uitilize the services of Human Resource providers or Recruitment specialists (IT personnel services-IT henkilöstö palvelut)

Check the Dictionary/Glossary provided at the end of this document to narrow down your search. For example, a SW developer/designer/ engineer or programmer should look for words like, Ohjelmoija, Suunnittelija, Ohjelmisto-suunnitt elija etc. Locate these words in the title of the job ads and click for detail.

On the page for the details of a job, one should look for the:
i- Education requirement (B.Sc./M.Sc. /DI/FM),
ii- Technology/Tools requirements (C/C++/C#/VC+ +, Java/JSP/J2EE/ J2ME, Oracle, SAP etc)
iii- Language Requirement (English - englannin, Finnish - suomen, Swedish - ruotsi). e.g. hyvää englannin ja suomen kielen taitoa (ruotsi on eduksi) - Good english and finnish language skills are required (swedish is a plus/advantage)
iv- At the bottom of the page will be contact info. starting with WWW-osoite - web address  (the exact terms used at MOL have been tranlated in the dictionary).
v- The most common method for applying is sending CV through email or filling an on-line application. You can also send the CV by post to the work address(Työpaikan osoite) of the company.

4- English-Finnish- English Dictionary

Note: You must select suomi-englanti or englanti-suomi accrodingly. Try deleting last few characters in a finnish word to get proper result.

5- Glossary/Dictionary

NOTE: In a word pattern 'abc-abc', the character '-' is written for clearity for naive users and you may not find it in actual text/advertisement.
